DEVO 14 (evening) – Part 2

The Right Sacrifice

Proverbs 21:3, To do righteousness and justice Is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

The first time that I read the story of Caine and Abel (Genesis 4) it perplexed me. I didn’t understand why such a good and loving God would not accept the sacrifice of his children. I later learned that it was not the sacrifice, but the reasons behind the sacrifice that God could not accept. Biblical/Spiritual laws were established by God and cannot be broken. This is why in the Old Testament; He could not accept a sacrifice that was not given or prepared according to His established Word. God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind (Numbers 23:19). Likewise, earthly laws are established, and we are subject to the consequences for breaking them, even just a “little bit”.

There was no “cutting corners for the Old Testament Saints and there should be no cutting corners with Christians today. There are no 1/2 truths. A lie is a lie, a murder is a murder, a theft is a theft, and God’s Word remains the truth that settles it ALL.

Notice that I mentioned the ACT, not the person. The Bible teaches us that evil and temptation will forever be present in this world. Satan will continue to use his same ole’ tactics; lust of the eye, lust of the flesh and pride of life (1 John 2:16). This is not an excuse for us to sin, but a reason to draw closer to our Creator.

We cannot maintain unrighteous lives and expect to enter into the Kingdom of God. And… contrary to popular opinion (and certain religious beliefs) no amount of sponsorship, volunteerism, mission trips, donations, offerings or tithing can pay our way into heaven. Once we make that ultimate decision; to confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus, believe in our hearts that He was raised from the dead, AND live righteous and just lives, we become acceptable. In Romans 12:1-2 Paul wrote, ”I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Being in God’s will is the right sacrifice. Selah…
